Workshop on

Sharing Knowledge on Disaster Warning: Community-based Last-Mile Warning System

 

   
Bangladesh Network Office for Urban Safety (BNUS) together with LIRNEasia; Sri Lanka has arranged workshop on “Sharing Knowledge on Disaster Warning: Community-based Last-Mile Warning System” at ITN centre, BUET on Thursday 25 th October 2007. The honorable Vice-Chancellor of BUET Dr. Prof. Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah delivered his inaugural speech as the Chief Guest in this workshop and Mr. K. H. Masud Siddique, DG, Disaster Management Bureau (DMB) also spoke on the occasion as the Special Guest. In this workshop Prof. Dr. Aftab Alam Khan, Dr. Ashutosh Sutra Dhar, Dr. S. Rangarajan, Dr. Rohan Samarajiva, Ms. Natasha Udu-gama, Mr. Nuwan Wuidyanatha, Mr. Nasirullah have presented their findings in this field. In this workshop discussion was held on Tsunami warning on 12th September, 2007 in Bangladesh. The honorable V.C. suggested on more appropriate warning system based of more improved and efficent model. On the other hand Dr. Samarendra Karmakar, Dir, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, described how his Department makes a decision on Tsunami and how their model works. Prof Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary suggested to form a Technical Advisory Committee for making a final decision to warn mass people about a Tsunami. The workshop was successfully completed with spontaneous participation of Sujit Kumar Debsarma (DDG, BMD), Dr. Samarendra Karmakar (Director, BMD), Meherun Nesa (SPARRSO), Mohammad Kabirul Islam, Md. Ali Bhuiyan, Ashutosh Sutradhar, Ms. Shammi Akthar, Kamruzzaman (BNNRC), Md. Moshiur Khandakar (SAFE), Mohammad Jobair (BUET-CDMP), Rubel Das (BNUS) and others. This workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Mehedi Ahmed Ansary.
